Business Interruption Insurance and the COVID-19 Pandemic
The Georgia Dept of Insurance recently released Bulletin 20-EX-3 that addresses business interruption insurance and the COVID-19 virus.
In general, business interruption insurance does NOT cover closures due to viruses or disease, unless that coverage is specifically added by endorsement.
Civil authority covers a business in case it is forced to close due to an order from a govermental authority. However, these policies generally require that there has been physical damage either on or near an insured property, so they also would likely NOT cover closures due to an epidemic/pandemic.
Several insurance carriers have indicated they may offer such coverages, and the Georgia Dept of Insurance intends to fast track approval of any of these endorsements, if they are filed.
